For the second straight week, Riverbank High's varsity girls basketball team saw a quest for tournament triumph end at the hands of a talented Division I program.

The Lady Bruins, who fell to Gregori (8-0) in the title game of the Escalon Lions Club Tournament, fell to a similar fate to talented McNair (5-0) of Stockton in the title game of the McNair Tournament.

"Coach (Anthony Matthews) of McNair said we were the toughest team he had played this preseason," Riverbank coach Tim Carnes said. "This was a game that you would have had to watch to see the effort put up by the Lady Bruins."

Riverbank trailed 36-18 at the half, but thundered back with a 19-17 advantage in the third quarter to pressure the Eagles. McNair would close with a 23-5 rally in the final quarter to put Riverbank away.

"We played our tails off against a full game of full court press," Carnes said. "We had our hands full with 6 foot, 4 inch Mandy Coleman, who took quite a bit of our attention."

Olivia Luu put up 16 points on McNair while Janelle Luu chipped in 12. Kendra Garcia added six while Vanessa Vargas and Amy McDonald each added four.

Olivia had nabbed 16 points in Riverbank's 50-32 win over Waterford on Dec. 5. Janelle added 13 in the win while Garcia (six), Vargas (four), Chloe Arnold (four), Raine Gallagher (three) and Tori Sandoval (two) chipped in points.

The team opened McNair tournament action two days later and landed a 13-point effort from Janelle while Olivia added six. Vargas (11) and McDonald (three) also scored. The win propelled Riverbank to a semifinal showdown with Liberty Ranch. Olivia scored 17 in the win while Janelle added 14. Vargas (seven), Sandoval (five) and Garcia (six) also came through big.

Olivia Luu was named to the McNair All-Tournament Team.

Riverbank's junior varsity team beat Lincoln in the final to capture championship honors in the McNair junior varsity bracket as well.

The JV team opens action in the Modesto Tournament on Friday. The varsity girls are at East Union on Monday.
