The 2004 Riverbank High School women's soccer season will start with a home tournament Friday and Saturday, Feb. 27-28, featuring 12 teams on three fields.
The Bruin team is again directed by coach Jim Anderson. In his first season, the Bruin girls fell on hard times, posting a lackluster 0-13-1 record, but 2004 promises to be a different story.
With a strong core of returning players and a coach who's had a chance to establish a solid program, this season should show a great improvement.
Anderson believes the team's strong bench, along with key players like forwards Sonia Silveira and Serena Palmer, mid-fielder Raquel Anguiano, and goalie Erika Fernandez, will make the team a factor in this year's Trans Valley League.
Notable underclassmen include Erica Galvan, a sophomore, and Courtney Nelson, a freshman.
"The team could find themselves in a position to make the playoffs before the season is through," said Anderson.
A few bounces of the ball may be the difference between competing for a league championship or falling in the middle of the pack. But the excitement and expectations for the season are high.
