After tasting the bitter flavor of defeat in three consecutive trips to the championship game of the Ron Peterson Tip-Off Basketball Tournament, Riverbank High's varsity boys relished the sweet zest of a 2010 championship on Saturday.

The Bruins, who lost tournament finales from 2007-2009, upended Calaveras by a 53-43 tally to snare the program's first Ron Peterson Tip-Off title since 2003.

The team went 3-0 and outscored opponents 180-142 during Thursday-to-Saturday action that saw 12 contests at the spectacular Ray Fauria Memorial Gymnasium.

"We are playing really well right now," Riverbank coach Jeff Jennings said. "These kids put in an enormous amount of time to get better and it shows."

Zack Gonzales was named tournament MVP after a stanza that saw him average over 20 points a game. Forward Anthony Navarette and point guard Alex Reynaga also made the All-Tournament list.

Gonzales scored 18 in a 67-46 win over Waterford in the tourney opener. Manuel Jimenez added 12 in the win while Robert Martinez scored 10. Ivan Manriquez and Rolaun Dunham chipped in eight each while Navarette and Rodrigo Silva put up four apiece.

Riverbank trailed Summerville early in the tournament semi-finals, but maintained a late lead after 25 Gonzales points and a 60-53 win. Reynaga, Navarette and Martinez scored 10 each while Jimenez tallied eight.

The Bruins upended Calaveras in the tourney finals after another 25-point game from Gonzales and nine from Dunham. Jimenez and Navarette scored six each while Reynaga added five.

Riverbank (3-0) was at Gustine (0-1) Tuesday, though results were not available at press time. The Bruins take on East Union (2-2) at home today, Dec. 8 at 7:15 p.m.
