Lady Bruin Booters Fall To Hughson, Escalon

Despite a spirited effort, soccer players of Riverbank High lost on the road to Hughson 4-2 on Tuesday and were then overwhelmed 4-0 by Escalon in Riverbank on Thursday.

Cindy Soto scored for the Bruins at four minutes into the first half of the game at Hughson, said Riverbank coach Roger Nelson, and Serena Palmer collected the second goal, also in the first half.

Soto lofted a long shot from way out on the right side of the field and the ball dropped just out of reach of the Hughson goalie's fingers.

Tifanny Banda collected an assist on that goal as Soto threw the ball in to her and Banda tapped it back for Soto's shot.

Palmer also received an assist on her goal from Banda. The Hughson goalie mishandled the ball. Palmer maneuvered around her and tapped it in.

Riverbank goalie Erica Fernandez posted seven saves in the first half and another nine in the second half, according to Nelson.

In the shutout by Escalon, Riverbank girls played better than they have been doing, he said. Even the Cougars' coach commented on their effort, Nelson said, but Escalon is a very talented team.

Escalon scored three of its goals in the first half. The Bruins got only one serious shot at the Escalon goal and the goalie deflected that one. Fernandez, in goal again for the Lady Bruins, made nine saves in the first half and two more in the second.

On Tuesday of this week, the Bruins were due to play Livingston at home. Riverbank lost the last time to Livingston but did not deserve that fate, said Nelson, hoping to avenge the earlier season loss. Thursday's game this week will be against Ripon Christian, whom the Bruins defeated at their last encounter.

The Bruins league record is 1-7-1 with their sole win being over Ripon Christian. The season record to date is 2-13-2.
