The Riverbank High varsity softball team has gotten its 2009 season under way and it seems as if the Lady Bruins will have something impressive on display during the upcoming high school softball campaign.

Riverbank participated in a round-robin style scrimmage and more than held their own against some of the Sac-Joaquin Section's solid small school programs.

Riverbank rolled out its returning ace Carlye Avey and the sophomore hurler looks poised to give her teammates all they will need out of their ace pitcher. Avey was successful in getting ahead of hitters and keeping her squad in every inning of action.

Riverbank obviously will be looking to fill some voids left by a solid graduating class from a season ago, but the squad does have some key returnees that will play a prominent role in the squad's success.

Riverbank matched up with a strong Capital Christian squad during its first action of the Feb. 28 scrimmage at Jim Elliott Christian in Lodi that featured teams from Jim Elliott, Capital Christian and Cosumnes River High of Elk Grove. Capital was able to scratch across a few runs early, but Riverbank did not retreat, battling back into the contest before it was abruptly ended to keep the tournament schedule on track.

The Lady Bruins displayed a team that will be focused on doing things the right way. Riverbank head coach Cassi Ross went over certain situations that the team will undoubtedly see throughout the season, even when this meant placing runners in scoring position so her squad could get the appropriate look.

This early in the campaign it is not all about wins and losses, but it is more so about putting the team in a good position to be successful at the season's end. Riverbank's work during the cold February morning will be the foundation for the teams' success in May.

After the season opener against Denair the Lady Bruins will be heading to Hilmar to do battle in the Hilmar Tournament March 4 through 7. Riverbank will kick tournament action off against Denair (March 6) followed by a contest against Turlock Christian (March 7).

Riverbank will start Trans-Valley League action with a March 17 home contest against Ripon Christian.
