With four starters suffering from the flu and three bench players absent from the contest, Riverbank High's winless Trans-Valley League volleyball team should have been well overmatched at host Hughson on Thursday.

But the Lady Bruins refused to go down quietly, winning the first game before slipping in 3-2 fashion to the Huskies.

"Girls were moved to new positions, but we worked well together," Riverbank coach Lisa Mila said. "We struggled a little in our coverage, and had a hard time covering all the tips. It was a battle. Hughson played very well, and we just didn't finish."

After early success from the serving stripe, Riverbank took the first game by a 25-22 score. Hughson battled back to win the second (19-25) and the third (21-25), but the Bruins bounced back with a 25-20 victory in game No. 4. Hughson won 12-15 in the final game to win the match.

Jordan Blevins led the program with six kills and 17 digs. Jessica McDonald added 10 assists while Katelyn Mitchell blocked four kill attempts. Estefania Zamora had two aces in the loss as well.

Riverbank (0-10 TVL) is 34th in the recent release of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV power ratings. The top 16 teams make the postseason.

The Bruins are at Ripon Christian (6-4) on Thursday.
