It was a heartbreaking end to a thrilling postseason ride in the Sac-Joaquin Section championships for the Lady Bruin basketball girls.

They came up a few points short in the Thursday afternoon, Feb. 27 title game in Division 4, falling to the Liberty Ranch Lady Hawks by a 55-50 final.

Riverbank got to the title game with a solid semifinal victory. The team continued its winning ways early last week, with a 62-50 win over the Lady Indians from Marysville, on the home court, on Tuesday, Feb. 25.

That victory put the RHS girls into Thursday’s D4 championship game at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento.

Unfortunately, even though they played their usual hard, effective game, the Lady Bruins were kept in check and held to just 50 points by Liberty Ranch.

Bruin Co-Ed Tennis

Riverbank played two matches against Hughson this past week.

On Monday, Feb. 24, it was a scrimmage, with players missing from both teams, so the match ups were different than what they might have been a bit a later in the season.

Riverbank won five matches and the Huskies one on Friday, in a league meet.

According to Coach Bruce Edwards, Riverbank earned wins in second boys singles, first and second girls singles, first boys doubles and first girls doubles.

“All were close matches with Riverbank often behind and had great comebacks,” Edwards said. “The three matches that were incomplete were also very close when we stopped due to darkness. All could have gone either way.”

Tennis players have a busy week set; they were slated to play against Ripon on the home court Tuesday, March 4 and will host Ripon Christian on Thursday, March 6.

On Friday, there’s the day-long Riverbank Doubles Tournament, with varsity matches on the RHS courts, and the JV playing on the city courts, near Cardozo Middle School.

In a battle of Bruins vs. Bruins, Riverbank lost a Rainbow Classic tournament game at Rainbow Fields to Bear Creek on Tuesday, Feb, 25. In their first game on Saturday, RHS tied Amador’s Lady Buffaloes from Sutter Creek, 4-4, then lost to Pitman High School from Turlock, 15-4.

They were set to host Stone Ridge Christian High School from Merced on Tuesday March 4, then will host Escalon in a Thursday, March 6 game at 4 p.m.

Bruin Volleyball

Riverbank’s volleyball boys hosted Oakdale on Friday, Feb. 28, falling in three games, 19-25, 21-25, and 13-25.
