Everything can go perfectly right and the challenges that present themselves in the Trans-Valley League can still be too great to overcome. That was the case throughout a tough year for the Riverbank High girls varsity basketball team.

The Lady Bruins' season came to a halt following a 46-26 loss to the Hughson Huskies in Hughson on Feb. 19. The Bruins had one of their more productive offensive outbursts of the season, but proved to be no match for a solid Hughson squad. The Huskies jumped out on Riverbank 25-13 over the first two periods of play, wasting the Lady Bruins' solid effort over their final 16 minutes of the season.

Riverbank standout Jenni Manriquez put together her most solid outing of the season, blasting Hughson for a team-high 14 points, just a basket off of the game-high point total.

Riverbank has been plagued by a slow start syndrome for the majority of the season, but it never proved more harmful than in the season finale. A quality showing from the Lady Bruins from the opening whistle could have made a tremendous difference in the outcome of the Hughson game.

Riverbank was able to match Hughson over the third period of play, but the double-digit deficit they were working into proved to be too tough of a march. Hughson added to the cushion in the fourth period, pushing the game out of reach.

The Lady Bruins also got quality efforts from Alyssa Adams and Jessica Hutson. Hutson chipped in six points on the evening, while teammate Adams was good for four points. Gricelda Murguia and Stesha Orr also got in on the scoring.

Even with minimal success on the season Riverbank was able to add more wins to the win column than the squad was able to do a season ago. With talented foes like Modesto Christian and Ripon on the TVL schedule each season, any improvements are hard to come by.

Riverbank's best TVL outing was a 15-point loss to Escalon in which the Lady Bruins were able to hold Escalon to just 29 points scored, but it was Riverbank's own offensive futility that eliminated the squads' best shot at a TVL win.

In earlier action for the week, the girls played their final home game and recognized graduating seniors for their efforts on the court.
