Lisa, Not Liz Named To Head Varsity Volleyball

Lisa Mila, -not Liz Mila- is the new coach for the Riverbank High School varsity volleyball team.

A sports story in the July 21 issue confused two sisters who carry similar first names. They are both from a Waterford volleyball family. Their mother, Kim, coached RHS volleyball several years ago.

But Lisa, who graduated from Riverbank High School eight years ago, has just left Laverne College in Southern California and will attend Stanislaus State University in Turlock to obtain a teaching credential while coaching the Bruin team.

Liz Mila, who graduated from RHS this year, will attend Chico State University. In the meantime, of course, she is helping the Bruins junior varsity coach Lina Quintanar train volleyball players during the summer vacation.

Quintanar, himself a graduate of RHS in 2002, is enrolled at Stanislaus State to play volleyball and to attain a teaching credential.

The varsity team will be a lot stronger this year, predicted Quintanar, who has been coaching both varsity and junior varsity hopefuls together until Lisa Mila arrives.

The Bruins won only one or two games last year, but the girls coming up "know their skills," Quintanar said.

Returning sophomores will include Jackie Barios, Gaby Zamora, Alison McHugh and Courtney Nelson.

The girls have been practising on Tuesday through Thursday mornings at the gymnasium. But this is the last week of training allowed before the two-week hiatus on practice, which is required before schools reopen in mid-August.
