Local Ballplayers Prep For Annual All Star Battle

Select varsity baseball players from Oakdale and Riverbank are scheduled to take part in the annual Stanislaus County High School All-Star Baseball Game on Saturday, June 13.

Modesto Sunrise Rotary hosts the game, and this is the 20th annual contest, featuring the best juniors and seniors from high school teams throughout the county. Games will be played at John Thurman Field in Modesto, with the Small School Game at 3:05 p.m. and the Large School Game at 7:05 p.m.

Proceeds from this event will be donated back to each high schools' baseball program. Tickets will be available at the gate or from participating players and coaches. Cost to attend is $4 per person. Gates will open at 1:15 p.m.

The Small School Game will feature Riverbank, Hughson, Big Valley, Waterford and Central Catholic on the East side, squaring off with Patterson, Orestimba, Modesto Christian, Denair and Turlock Christian on the West. Players from Riverbank selected for the contest as all-stars are junior Marcus Sahagun, infield and junior Ryan Bowden, pitcher. Ismael Mercado, Riverbank's head coach and Jorge Costello from Riverbank will serve as assistant coaches for the all-star game under manager Bob Etcheverry of Hughson.

For the Large School contest, Oakdale, Beyer, Downey, Ceres, Central Valley and Enochs make up the East team, with Johansen, Turlock, Davis, Pitman and Modesto on the West. Oakdale players tapped as all-stars are senior Vince Helms, second base and senior Justin Jones, pitcher and outfielder. Manager will be Greg Magni of Ceres with his assistant coaches all from Ceres High as well.
