Bruin and Lady Bruin winter teams are preparing for their upcoming winter sports seasons, as non-league scrimmages got underway over the past week.
Bruin Soccer
Varsity and JV soccer squads took to the home pitch in Angelo Novi Stadium on the RHS campus on Friday, Nov. 15, hosting Wood High School from Vacaville.
While the Bruin squad fell 5-2, the JV Bruins came away with a 6-2 victory, scoring all their goals after giving up two quick tallies early in the first half.
The varsity team next hosts Delta Charter from Vacaville on Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 20 at 5:30 p.m. League play doesn’t commence until after the first of the year.
So far, Coach Juan Harvey says, his team roster has not ‘jelled,’ and may eventually include players now on the JV squad, so he hasn’t issued jersey numbers or nailed down all the position players as of yet.
Bruin Basketball
Boys varsity basketball players got to stretch out the kinks in a four-way scrimmage on Saturday morning, Nov. 16 on the home courts.
The Bruins hosted Oakdale’s Mustangs as well as a team from Woodland and one from the Bay Area.
The first part of the morning saw all four teams playing at once, using two of the cross-court PE courts in the Ray Fauria Memorial Gymnasium.
After a break, the teams took to the regulation paint, playing half court and rotating offense and defensive squads, with two teams on each end.
Like the soccer team, basketball rosters are not yet set, with players in practice jerseys and no firm numbering system.
The basketball boys are scheduled to travel to nearby Modesto to take on Enochs High School in non-league action on Friday, Nov. 22 with a 7 p.m. tip off time for the varsity game. They then go to Johansen on Monday, Nov. 25.
Boys basketball won’t be back on the home court until the first week in December. The annual Ron Peterson Tip-Off Tournament is set for Thursday, Dec. 5 through Saturday, Dec. 7 at home.
Lady Bruins Sports
Girls soccer started with scrimmages last week and has two more this week, but they won’t play at home again until Thursday, Dec. 5 when they host McNair High School in pre-season play.
Girls basketball is scheduled to play at Johansen in Modesto on Nov. 25 with a 6 p.m. tip off for the varsity. Then, the squads travel to Manteca to face off with Sierra on Wednesday, Nov. 27.
Wrestling
The Bruins are fielding wrestlers again this year, but may not have a complete squad, in all weight divisions, so they may not have any home matches, as in recent years. The grapplers have typically attended tournaments, entering as individual competitors as opposed to a team.
