Riverbank Bruin fall sports teams were in action this past week but all of the games played were on the road, the teams traveling for their Trans-Valley League contests.
The Bruin gridiron teams traveled to Escalon on Friday, Oct. 11, with the varsity boys taking on the league-leading, and undefeated, Cougars.
Seriously outmanned, about 34 players to Riverbank’s 16, the RHS varsity squad is required to play both directions, offense and defense, while their opponents typically can easily rest just about any position at any point in the game.
The Cougars mounted most of their offense in the first half, with just one touchdown scored in the third quarter. The host Cougars subbed out the majority of their starters for the second half. In the fourth quarter, it was all Bruins as they put two late scores on the board to avoid the shutout. Runs, passes and a two-point conversion accounted for the Riverbank points, falling 48-15, with the Cougars remaining undefeated, 3-0 in TVL and 7-0 overall this season.
JV play ended with the host JV Cougars ahead of the young Bruins, 45-0.
Lady Bruin Volleyball
Riverbank’s girl netters were away for both of their league games over the past week. On Monday, they went to Ripon, on Wednesday, the competition was in Hughson.
The Lady Bruins fell in a three-game match against the Lady Indians in Ripon, 25-11, 25-15 and 13-25, on Oct. 7.
The result was similar against the Lady Huskies on Oct. 9: 25-12, 26-24, and 16-25.
The Lady Bruin linksters had two home matches last week, hosting Denair on Tuesday and Gustine came to visit on Thursday, with both matches played on the Escalon Golf Course. Scores were not reported.
The league’s Year-End Tournament was scheduled for Monday this week at Micke Grove Golf Course, after the News press deadline. The annual Pro-Am (with teachers competing against the Lady Bruin golfers) was scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, also at the Escalon course.
Co-Ed Cross Country
Bruin runners, both boys and girls, did not have any meets this past week but are busy tuning up for the TVL Championship Meet that is set for next Wednesday, Oct. 30, at Tuolumne Park in Modesto. They’re set for a workout at the Rough Rider Tournament in Fresno this Saturday, Oct. 19.
