Warm, warmer, warmest, even hot describes the weather of the last few weeks in Riverbank. Yet the Bruins football team has persevered, with early evening practices on campus.

With the start of the school year, practices now should take on just a little bit more deliberateness, with the first football game just a couple of weeks away.

First opponent on the varsity schedule is the Madison Park Academy, with the Bruins traveling to Oakland for a 3 p.m. Saturday match up on Aug. 18. On Tuesday, Aug. 21, the JV Bruins travel to Jackson in Amador County, to take on Argonaut High School JV Mustangs, at 5 p.m.

Later that week, on Friday, Aug. 24 at 7 p.m., Riverbank varsity goes to Clarksburg, west of Elk Grove, to take on the Delta High School Saints.

It won’t be until the third game of the season, on Friday, Aug. 31, that the Bruins host their first home game of the 2018 season, when the Sierra Ridge Academy/Right of Passage from San Andreas comes to town. Varsity game time is 7:30 p.m. The JV team will face the Waterford Wildcats at 5:30 p.m., according to the published schedule.

The Bruins varsity season calls for 10 games this year, with five of them at home.

Girls Volleyball

Tryouts and practices for Lady Bruin volleyball began last week, ahead of their first match, set for Monday, Aug. 20, at home against Johansen High School of Modesto. It will be the Foundation Game, a fundraiser, and varsity only.

After that, they’ll be on the road for their first two matches, at Argonaut High in Jackson, on Tuesday, Aug. 21, and at Downey High in Modesto, on Thursday, Aug. 23.

The girls’ first home matches are three in a row, against Gustine High School, on Monday, Aug. 27, then another the next day, hosting Grace Davis of Modesto, and again on Wednesday, Aug. 29, against Ceres.

Girls volleyball contests start with JV at 5 p.m. and varsity at 6 p.m. At home, they’re in the Ray Fauria Memorial Gymnasium. The Lady Bruin volleyball schedule this year calls for 10 home matches, with the last one on Oct. 10, which will be Senior Night.

Lady Bruin Golf

RHS Girls golf starts off the season with two away matches, at the Jack Tone Golf Course, against Ripon Christian High School’s Lady Knights, on Monday, Aug. 20, at 3 p.m., and the next day, they travel to play Hilmar’s Lady Yellowjackets, with tee time of 4 p.m.

Lady Bruin Golf hosts its first home match, at the Escalon Golf Course, on Thursday, Aug. 23, at 4 p.m.

The girls golf schedule calls for seven home matches, with the last one on Tuesday, Oct. 9, with League, Pro-Am, Division and Masters tournaments rounding out the season.
