Riverbank High School athletes saw both the agony of rainouts last week and the joy of victory — for some — at the Homecoming games on Friday.

With the high winds and heavy rain pelting the area, Wednesday soccer matches were postponed. The girls team was scheduled to play at Ripon, who was also set to send their boys’ teams here, but the squads saw games called off before scheduled bus departure times came.

Those games are expected to be made up at a later date.

The joy in Mudville came with basketball games on Friday, Jan. 20, at home, where two out of three Bruin boys basketball teams racked up victories as they helped celebrate Winter Homecoming in the Ray Fauria Memorial Gymnasium.

First up, the freshman team, though behind in the fourth quarter, managed to pull even then edge ahead to finish 54-50 over the frosh Huskies of Hughson in the first game.

The junior varsity Bruins weren’t so lucky, however. In the second contest of the night, they were behind much of the game, but were only down by 10 points by the beginning of the final JV frame.

With about a minute and a half remaining, the little Bruins were able to tie the score at 50. A free-throw shot with 60 seconds remaining pulled Riverbank ahead, 51-50.

Unfortunately, that edge was a brief one, with a series of strategic timeouts, on both sides, resulting in a two-pointer sunk on behalf of Hughson, edging out the home team. The final score was 52-51.

On the other hand, the varsity Bruins rolled to an easy victory over the Huskies. They powered to a 19-8 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back.

At the half, as the Homecoming Queen and King were announced, the game was pretty much out of reach. Riverbank’s bench saw some court time in the final two periods. The final score was 67-35 in favor of the host team.

This week, the boys were to host Mountain House yesterday, Tuesday, Jan. 24 then visit Escalon to take on the Cougars on Friday, Jan. 27.

Lady Bruin Basketball

Girls teams last week saw mixed results on the scoreboard.

On Tuesday, Jan. 17, the teams traveled to Ripon, where the varsity Lady Bruins fell 75-69. The JV team fell 74-31.

On Thursday, the girls traveled to Hughson where the Lady Bruins came out on top of a 67-34 score. That JV game was not available at press time.

This week, they were to travel to Mountain House on Tuesday and host the Lady Cougars of Escalon tomorrow, Thursday, Jan. 26.

Soccer Matches Scheduled

Those soggy soccer fields were set to get a workout this week, both home and away.

The girls soccer team was set to host Modesto Christian on Monday, then face Hilmar here today, Jan. 25.

Boys soccer will face those two teams, on the same days, at away matches in league play.
