While the spring season is nearing its end for some Riverbank sports teams, last week was busy for the tennis players competing for RHS. Their regular season concluded and the Trans-Valley League Tournament was held in Modesto.
The co-ed Bruins won all but one TVL season match, coach Bruce Edwards said. The one they lost was the first of the season, way back in March, he noted.
And the co-ed team tennis teams had their best league tournament ever last weekend.
“Out of the 14 starting players, we brought home 13 plaques,” Edwards said.
The league gives plaques for both first and second place finishes.
Both first seed singles Alex Alfaro and Jessica Vasquez won their tournament matches, and second seed girls singles player Lili Trevino came in second in the tournament.
“Lili’s second place finish counts as a first in ‘second singles,’ since she was second out of all the girls competing in the tournament,” Edwards said, adding that she lost only to teammate Vasquez in the finals.
Edwards listed the other team members and their finishes: Number 1 girls doubles Jackie Pantoja and Jasmine Rubio and number 2 girls doubles Alondra and Carla Ibarra won their slots and first seed mixed doubles pair Marcos Viera and Selena Garcia also finished in first place.
First seed boys doubles pair Jesus Aguiniga and Alejandro Manzo scored a second place, as did, second seed doubles team Christian Bolanos and Erik Estrada.
“In other words, against the rest of the league, out of nine divisions, we took six firsts and two seconds,” Edwards said.
The Trans-Valley League consists of high school teams from Escalon, Hilmar, Hughson, Modesto Christian, Mountain House, Ripon, Ripon Christian and Riverbank.
The tennis team will remain busy this week, as well, with the Sac-San Joaquin Tournament matches scheduled for Monday and Wednesday. The Bruins had a bye on May 1, with their first match scheduled for May 3, against the winner of a first round match between Sonora and Denair from Monday.
Their match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m., here on the home court.
