Both boy and girl soccer players took to the practice field for the first time last Monday, with conditioning, exercises and skill drills the order of the day.

Basketball players, both boys and girls, took to the hardwood for their first practices, as well.

Where basketball teams work out in both the Ray Fauria Memorial Gymnasium and the old Bruin Gym, the soccer players will have a harder time of it.

While it will be warm and dry indoors this winter, the soccer players share the outdoor grass practice areas where, as fall turns into winter later on, there will be less and less daylight, with the shortest days coming toward the end of December.

Although it has recently acquired an electric scoreboard, the RHS soccer facility currently has no lighting, so all home soccer games will be played under the lights on the football field at Angelo Novi Stadium, also on campus.

The first boys basketball games of the season will come this Saturday, Nov. 19, with four-team varsity scrimmages at home. Both varsity and JV will scrimmage at home next Tuesday, Nov. 24. All three teams, frosh, JV and varsity will play against Enochs, also at home, on Wednesday, Nov. 25, the day before Thanksgiving.

The boys varsity basketball Foundation Game is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 28, with the Bruins hosting Johansen at 7 p.m.

The first varsity girls basketball will come with their own Foundation Game, also hosting Johansen, starting at 6 p.m. on Nov. 28.

The JV girls will participate in the Escalon Tournament on Wednesday, Nov. 30, through Friday, Dec. 2.

Varsity girls will play in the Edison Tournament in Stockton Thursday through Saturday, Dec. 1 through 3.

The next girls basketball home games will be on Tuesday, Dec. 6, starting at 6 p.m.

From there, it won’t be until Jan. 5, 2017, that the Lady Bruins return to the home court for basketball. They’ll be busy with tournaments and a few pre-season games, but they’ll all be away games.

Soccer starts at home with scrimmages against Johansen High School on Tuesday, Nov. 23, then continues after Thanksgiving.
