Wrapping up Homecoming Week with basketball on Friday night, Riverbank boys basketball saw mixed results.

A jam-packed Fauria Gymnasium found RHS fans both happy and sad after the game results against the visiting Mustangs of Mountain House High School.

Here are the Friday night hoops results.

Freshmen Win, JVs Lose

To start the evening, the youngest Bruins took control of the game early and ended up beating Mountain House by a final score of 78-61, the frosh boys clicking on all cylinders.

The JV boys weren’t as fortunate. They were down 19-8 at the end of the first quarter and behind 38-23 at the half. The deficit was 46-31 at the end of three quarters. They were never really in the game, but they came close in the final period, finishing down 61-57, just two baskets off the pace.

Because Homecoming King and Queen activities were scheduled for halftime of the varsity game, RHS cheerleaders got to perform at the midpoint of the JV contest.

Varsity Victory

Except for the visitor’s section, the gym was full of family and friends cheering for an exciting Bruin game, and they weren’t disappointed.

Finishing the first quarter ahead, 19-15, the home team held on to its lead, showing a 33-27 edge at the half.

The margin had stretched to 48-34 by the end of the third quarter, with Riverbank finishing up on the winning side of the 66-53 score at the final buzzer, helping cap off the Homecoming festivities for the week.

In earlier Trans-Valley League play during the week, the frosh Bruins were at Hughson for a win, 60-56, on Tuesday, Jan. 26, but the varsity boys came up short, 78-73, against the Huskies.

The JV boys game score was not reported by press time for The News.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

On Tuesday, Jan. 26, the Lady Bruins hosted Hughson, winning the TVL contest 57-38, while the JV girls came up short, 37-15.

On Thursday, Jan. 28 the girls teams hit the road, as they both traveled to Mountain House and battled in a couple of close contests. There, the varsity fell 65-56, and the JV came up short, 28-23.

Second half action in the Trans-Valley League starts this week, with just a handful of games remaining on the schedule.

Yesterday, Tuesday, the Lady Bruins were scheduled to play Escalon at home to open up the second half of TVL play, the game held after press time. They are to host Ripon Christian tomorrow, Feb. 4. Next week, they play host to Hilmar on Tuesday, Feb. 9, then have their Senior Night on Thursday, Feb. 11, hosting Ripon Christian, before closing the season on the road, at Hughson, on Tuesday, Feb. 16.

On the boys’ side, the Bruins were scheduled to play at Escalon yesterday, Feb. 2. On Friday, Feb. 5, they are to travel to Ripon Christian, then to Hilmar on Tuesday, Feb. 9. They will return home on Feb. 11 to face Ripon High, then host Hughson for Senior Night on Tuesday, Feb. 16.

Also this week, as winter sports begin to finish up their seasons, RHS track and field was scheduled to begin workouts on Monday, Feb. 1, with baseball tryouts set for today, Feb. 3, on the practice field.
