In the middle of fall finals and just a day before the end of the semester, Riverbank Bruin boys and girls varsity soccer teams found victory on a rain soaked home field.

On Thursday, Dec. 15, it had been raining for about 24 hours when the Lady Bruins first took to the field to face the Lady Lions of Big Valley Christian High School in Modesto. The rain didn’t let up just because there were soccer matches to play.

Large puddles of water dotted the playing field as well as the sidelines, and if they hadn’t been before, anyone who fell came up soaked.

The Riverbank girls held on to a 2-0 score for their victory. Then the varsity Bruin boys took the field, warmed up and started their match, also against Big Valley. Also in the pouring rain.

They scored a pair of goals in the first few minutes, ultimately sweeping to a 10-0 win of their own.

Earlier in the week, before the rain arrived, the Lady Bruins hosted Argonaut High School, from Jackson, losing 2-0.

This year, the California Interscholastic Federation, which regulates high school sports, realigned soccer play so all teams could be eligible for the section and state championship games. Previously, boys soccer was in the fall, girls was in the spring.

Luckily, pre-season matches and tournaments won’t stop just because school’s out for winter break.

The boys soccer teams are scheduled to play at home again tomorrow, Thursday, Dec. 22, against Calaveras of San Andreas. They’re set to play in Escalon against the Cougars for the Trans-Valley League opener on Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2017, and play again at home on Monday, Jan. 9, the first day back from winter break. They’ll host the Mountain House Mustangs that day.

Girls soccer was to travel to Bear Creek High School in Lodi on Monday, Dec. 19, then will go to Calaveras tomorrow, Dec. 22. They’ll be at home again on Jan. 4, 2017, to meet the Lady Cougars from Escalon. They’ll travel to Mountain House on Jan. 9.

Basketball Continues During Break

Both Lady Bruin basketball teams were involved in tournaments last week and again on Monday this week. Regular pre-season games are scheduled for this week, at Bret Harte tomorrow, then at Summerville High in Tuolumne County next Wednesday, Dec. 28. On Jan 3, 2017, they’ll open up Trans-Valley League action by going to Escalon, but their next home games won’t be until Thursday, Jan. 5, against Ripon Christian.

Boys basketball was to host Beyer High School’s varsity yesterday and face more tournament action this week. They’ll play their first home game of the new year on Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2017, taking on the Escalon Cougars as the teams meet in Trans-Valley League play.
