Volleyball Gets Win At Home; Football Teams Fall
JENISE
Jenise Perryman, 11, goes up for a kill as Arelia Zamora, 6, looks on during second game action at home against the Lady Knights of Downey High School of Modesto. The Lady Bruins held on for a tough 3-2 game match win on Wednesday, Sept. 6.

It was a busy week for RHS sports teams, with Lady Bruin volleyball on the court for multiple matches, JV football on Thursday and varsity football on the home field on Friday. For the Bruin gridiron team, it was the third home game in a row, but they’ll hit the road this week for a Sept. 15 contest before returning for Homecoming on Sept. 22.

Lady Bruin Volleyball

After losing a tough, tight match, 3-2, to the Lady Spartans of Grace M. Davis High School on Thursday, Aug. 31, the Lady Bruins took on three matches in as many days this past week.

On Tuesday, Sept. 5, they traveled to Sutter Creek to meet the Lady Buffaloes of Amador High School, losing the match in three straight games, 3-25, 18-25 and 9-25.

On Wednesday, though, it was a different matter. A home contest against Downey High that was originally scheduled for Modesto, the Riverbank ladies fought to a 3-2 victory.

Scores were 25-12, 21-25, 20-25, 25-19 and 15-12, with the Lady Bruins winning game one before falling in games two and three. They battled back to even the match at 2-2 with a win in the fourth game, then took the deciding game in the match to nail down the win.

Thursday at home, the varsity squad lost in three straight games to the Lady Hawks of Delhi.

The JV Lady Bruins were to play in a JV tournament in Oakdale on Saturday, but information from the tourney was not available at press time.

The next home match for volleyball was to be Tuesday, Sept. 12, with the Lady Cougars of Escalon scheduled to be in town for a Trans-Valley League contest, played after press time for The News.

Barring any changes in the schedule, volleyball games will all be played away for the next two weeks. They’ll next return home on Tuesday, Oct. 3 to take on the Lady Yellowjackets of Hilmar.

Bruin Football

All the Riverbank gridiron action this past week was on the home field, with JV play on Thursday, Sept. 7, hosting Escalon's freshman team, and the Bruin varsity hosting the Knights of Stone Ridge Christian High School the next evening. Stone Ridge doesn’t field a JV team, so the JV Bruins picked up the game with the Escalon freshmen.

The Bruin JV team held off the young Cougars for the first quarter until just before the end of the period, and ended the half down just 7-0. They continued to play tough through the end of the third quarter before allowing another score, but they just couldn’t seem to get their offense in gear, ultimately going down to defeat, 14-0.

On Friday, the varsity Bruins hosted the Stone Ridge Knights from Merced, also stalling in the offense department. Despite successful plays scattered throughout the evening, the 40-0 deficit at the half ended up being the final score as the host Bruins could never break into the end zone.

The varsity team will travel to Fremont this week to take on the California School of the Deaf.
