Mud Doesn't Deter Bruin Golfers

Undeterred by recent wet weather, golfers of Riverbank High School got the season underway with a couple of matches against Central Catholic and Modesto Christian on the Bruins' home course at La Contenta in Valley Springs.

"We've been rained on but we played in the mud. Our scores will get better as the courses dry out," said Riverbank coach John Bartlett.

The Bruin boys lost to Central Catholic on Tuesday, March 1, by 217-289, and to Modesto Christian on the next day, by 217-272.

"We have some very young players. Every one is a freshman or sophomore. But our number one and two players, Patrick Dean and Nick Hernandez, are pretty decent," he added.

Hernandez shot a 50 against Central, followed by Randy Franco, with 57; Jose Jimenez, with 59; Dean, with 60; and Erik Claros, with 63.

In the match against Modesto Christian, Dean carded a 48; Hernandez, 51; Franco, 57; Nick Bos, 58; and Claros, also 58.

'The first league match is on Tuesday, March 8, against Ripon Christian," said Bartlett. "I expect Dean and Hernandez to do well. They should place among the better golfers. After them, we'll have to see how we do."

The Bruins are also due to play Hughson at home on Thursday of this week, and Ripon away onTuesday, March 15.
