Well Versed On Bruin Team
The new head football coach at Riverbank High School is already well acquainted with the boys he is training for the coming season.
Matt Elkins, 29, has been a varsity assistant coach for the Bruins for the last four years. He worked with the previous head coache Sean Leveroos, and before him, Rusty Stivers.
Stivers, Leveroos and Elkins, in fact, are old friends and football buddies from their college days.
Elkins played football for Modesto Junior College (and later coached there), taking over the running back position that Stivers held before him.
He was first team All American at MJC and won a football scholarship to Sacramento State University.
Elkins completed courses in general studies at MJC and in psychology at Sacramento State University. He tried some teaching at a special education school in Oakdale.
But he is spending most of his time nowadays coaching football, so he is in no hurry to reenter teaching.
Elkins lives in Sonora with his four-year-old son, Sam, and has been commuting down to the Valley for many years.
The new head coach's assistants for the varsity team include RHS teacher Monte Wood, Chris Johnson, and 2003 RHS graduate and former quarterback Michael DeCroix as a volunteer.
Rudy Serrato, a school district maintenance worker, is head coach for the junior varsity team. RHS teacher Ryan Hern, Ryan Wynne, and another former Bruin, Jesse Sesma, serve as volunteer assistants him.
For lack of numbers, there is no separate freshman team this year. The frosh will play on the junior varsity team.
