The California Department of Fish and Wildlife has posted its calendar of events and activities for November. Wildlife areas, ecological reserves and other properties may be closed due to wildfires or storm damage. Hunters and outdoor enthusiasts are strongly encouraged to check for closures before leaving on any recreational trip. All calendar items are also subject to change.

Various Days

Shared Habitat Alliance for Recreational Enhancement (SHARE) access permit application deadline for hunting opportunities. The SHARE program is offering wild pig, deer, waterfowl and upland game hunting this fall. A $12.75 non-refundable application fee (plus handling fees) is charged for each hunt choice. For more information, visit wildlife.ca.gov/hunting/share.

Swan Tours. Celebrate the bird migration on the Pacific Flyway this fall and winter. CDFW’s popular, free swan tours are set for select Saturdays, November through January. Held in partnership with Mathews Rice Operation, the tours transverse flooded rice fields north of Marysville. This area boasts one of the largest overwintering populations of tundra swans in the Central Valley, as well as abundant geese, ducks, shorebirds and raptors. To register, email genelle.treaster@wildlife.ca.gov.

Saturdays

Join Nimbus Fish Hatchery for a free, family friendly mile hike to explore the edge of the American River and possibly see salmon getting ready to spawn. Participants might also spot other wildlife, including migratory birds, mammals and insects. Please be prepared for the hike with proper footwear, water and sun protection. Nov. 4

Recreational Dungeness Crab Season opened. The recreational Dungeness crab fishery opened with restrictions statewide on the first Saturday of November. The recreational take of Dungeness crab using crab traps is temporarily restricted between the Sonoma/Mendocino County line and Lopez Point, Monterey County (Fishing Zones 3 and 4) due to presence of humpback whales and potential for entanglement from trap gear. The trap restriction does not affect the use of other methods of take such as hoop nets and snares. Visit wildlife.ca.gov/conservation/marine/whale-safe-fisheries for more information and to join the email list.
