Pony All Stars draw a blank during weekend tournament play

Riverbank All Stars in the Pony League "played hard but were "outgunned," to use their manager Jim Williams' expression, during the weekend tournament at Rainbow Fields.

Starting with a 12-0 loss to the Central Valley Rebels on Saturday morning, they also lost to the Placer Pirates by approximately the same score that afternoon, and then to another opponent on Sunday.

"The players on opposing teams were bigger, older and more experienced. While it was supposed to be a 14-and-under tournament, some of their opponents were 15- and even 16-year-olds, which is allowed by the rules, Williams added.

He is looking into getting the Riverbank team into a tournament in Empire. This will give them better matching competition against teams such as Hickman and Waterford.

Riverbank did not get a single hit, and lost in three innings to the Rebels. But that team went on to win the tournament. It will represent the region in the World Series Tournament in Las Vegas.

Players on the Pony All Stars of the Riverbank Youth Baseball & Softball Association include Steven Carson, Joseph Doornewaard, Zachary Fisher, Ruben Torres, Tiger Williams, Brent Zurlinden, Robert Gill, Paul Gonzales, David Lopez, Marc Jr. Miglin, Dakota Riley, Nick Threet and James Winstead.

The Minor All Stars, in the 10-and-under age group, found their games cancelled. They hope to play in a tournament over the July 4 holiday, said RYBSA spokesman Terry Codde.
