RHS Athletes Don't Slow Pace In Summer

With less than a month left before the start of school, Riverbank High athletes are training hard for fall sports.

Football team hopefuls are working out on Mondays and Thursdays at 4 p.m. under their new varsity coach, Matt Elkins. The players went to Hilmar for a seven-on-seven practice last Thursday.

Daniel DeCroix reportedly is being groomed as the Bruins varsity quarterback for the coming season.

Volleyball players are playing bump, set and spike in the gymnasium on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, the varsity squad starting as early as 6:30 a.m. The varsity team has a new coach, Liz Mila, an RHS graduate and former Lady Bruin volleyball player. Lina Quintanar, another ex-Bruin, will continue to coach the junior varsity squad.

Cross country runners also are getting up early to practice. They too run at 6 or so in the morning, every morning, then adjourn to the weight room for strength building exercises.

The girls will be really disappointed if they don't win the state title this year, school officials said. They are very experienced and very dedicated, said RHS athletics director Karen Adams.

"Those girls are fanatics. They never stop running, Brittany Harrison, Georgina Arnold, Maritza Garcia and the rest," said Adams. "Among the boys, I know Robert Searway is out there practicing and maybe Omar Fernandez and Isaac Montoya."

The boys' soccer team is not shaping up so well. Coach Martin Gonzales, a teacher at Rio Altura School, said there are no team workouts going on, because only two of his potential players have taken their physical examinations and bought insurance.

Without those minimum requirements, they cannot even practice, he said, in encouraging all potential soccer players to get a physical and insurance before the summer is over.

Adams noted that the "dead" period of two weeks, Aug. 1 through Aug. 15 when high school athletes are forbidden to do anything except conditioning, is almost here.

The football schedule starts with an away scrimmage at Summerville slated for Friday, Sept. 3. This will be followed by a home game against Hughson on Sept. 10 and the first league game at home against LeGrand on Sept. 17.

The volleyball schedule, the only other fall sports schedule available to date, begins with an away game against Turlock Christian on Tuesday, Aug. 24 and the first home game against Delhi on the following day.
