Progress is tough to recognize when each night the program is forced to face some of the best girls' basketball talent in the area, but the Riverbank High girls varsity basketball program is quietly making some turns in the right direction.

The Lady Bruins kicked off an eventful Trans-Valley League schedule with a pair of one-sided defeats at the hands of Ripon and Ripon Christian.

Riverbank put together a quality effort against the Knights of Ripon Christian on Tuesday, Jan. 20, but a 17-point third period eliminated the Lady Bruins opportunity at opening the TVL schedule with a win.

Riverbank was forced to battle back from a double digit deficit after the first period of play, making the squad's already challenging mission that much more difficult.

Riverbank playmaker Jenni Manriquez looks to be back into playing form, posting a team-high 13 points in the 44-23 loss. The Lady Bruins were not able to help their cause, missing on over half of their 13 free throw attempts.

Riverbank's effort was not matched in the team's next contest when the Lady Bruins were handled convincingly, 50-18, by the Ripon Indians. The Indians' rich postseason play streak seems to be intact as the squad rolled out on all cylinders, posting 34 points in the first half while giving up just five points.

Manriquez continued her offensive outburst, turning in a game-high 14 points in the loss. Riverbank was able to get some things going offensively in the second half, but Ripon's initial damage was far too much to recover from.

The Lady Bruins will get anther opportunity to get things on the right track as they roll out the welcome mats for the Hughson Huskies in a Saturday afternoon game, Jan. 31, but first they must travel to take on the Modesto Christian Crusaders to continue the TVL grind on Wednesday, Jan. 28.

The Crusaders are on a six-game winning streak and have not given up a game on their home court this season. Escalon experienced first hand how dominant the squad is, falling to Modesto Christian 101-14 in a recent TVL contest.

Riverbank will have to do a lot of things right to compete against the Crusaders.

The contest is scheduled to tip off at 7:30 p.m.
