Two of the Sac-Joaquin Section's top small school track and field programs waged battle on Wednesday in Trans-Valley League action at Riverbank High.

Riverbank boys took a 75-61 win over Escalon, but the Cougar girls topped the Lady Bruins by a 72.5-64.5 tally.

"It's a good gauge of where we are at right now for both girls and boys," Riverbank coach Monte Wood said. "It was a highly competitive meet, which is great for your kids because it gets the team excited and brings out the best of them."

Jorge Gomes brought out the best of Riverbank's male runners with first place finishes in both the 400 and 200 meter run. Riverbank's 400-relay team was disqualified after a baton drop, but the 1600 relay team sped to a top honor.

Riverbank owned the field events, with wins from Jose Moreno (shot put), Casey DeYoung (pole vault) and Robert Martinez (long jump, high jump, triple jump).

Escalon girls won 10 of the 16 competitions, including all but one field event. Riverbank's Jade Finch won the 100 while Adrianna Rosales took the 400. Genisa Contreras was first in both the 100 and 300 hurdles, and also competed on Riverbank's wining 400 relay team. Mikayla Anderson took the triple jump as well. Lizzy Uscanga was second in the 1600 and 3200 behind talented Escalon distance runner Pearl Rivers, but set a personal best in the mile and managed her best combined time of the season.

"Lizzy did really well," Wood said. "Escalon just did a little better on the girls side and we couldn't get the scores we wanted."

Riverbank will be off from spring action until a match with Hughson on April 14. The team will travel to the Stanislaus City Meet at MJC on April 16. By IKE DODSON
