To Move Toward Playoffs
Two touchdowns by Ben DeYoung in the first half and another pair by Jon Blount in the second half gave Riverbank a 28-6 win over Denair on Friday.
"We played very well. The kids were very focused. We'd stressed the need for a win in this game to reach the playoffs. Our backs were to the wall and we got the win," said Bruin coach Matt Elkins.
Elkins noted that Riverbank is undefeated on the road. The Bruins have a 4-0 record in away games.
In Friday's away game, Denair scored in the opening quarter but never managed to put any more points on the board. Riverbank, however, scored 14 points in the second quarter and another 14 in the last quarter.
DeYoung first scored on a 53-yard run. The Bruins chose to run for the extra points, and Daniel DeCroix threw to Michael Dougherty to boost the six points to eight.
DeYoung again ran, this time for 73 yards, in his second touchdown. The conversion kick failed.
In the last quarter, Blount put more points on the board as he rambled for 27 yards into Denair's end zone. This time Antonio Vigil's PAT kick was true.
On the very next play, Blount again grabbed the ball and this time went 49 yards for pay dirt. Vigil's kick again was on target.
"We didn't pass the ball much,' Elkins agreed. "We ran the ball hard. Keeping it on the ground gave us control of the game."
Among defensive players, Elkins picked out for praise defensive lineman Nick Cota, tight end and cornerback Tony Winstead and wide receiver and cornerback J. B. Higuera.
According to the statistics, Riverbank amassed 403 yards in total offense compared with 292 by Denair.
But the Bruins passed for only 41 yards of that, whereas Denair put the ball in the air for 120 yards.
DeCroix completed five out of 12 passes, while his Denair opponent was successful in 10 out of 26 attempts.
The Bruins fumbled the ball twice and lost it once. Denair fumbled four times and lost the ball every time.
Looking to the next game, which is at home against Delhi this Friday, Elkins is quietly confident Riverbank will win and sew up a berth in the playoffs.
"Delhi hasn't won a league game this season. We should be able to take care of them," he said.
