The Riverbank High School JV boys' basketball team went 2-1 at the Denair Tournament Dec. 2-4.

In the opener, they lost to Denair, 68-42, being outscored in each of the first three quarters before narrowly taking the fourth, 13-12. Levi Luca was top scorer with 12 points, and Evan Gunther had 11 points. Both players are freshmen.

"We just came out flat," said coach Derrick Burnett. "Defensively, we didn't play as well as I would've hoped."

But Riverbank rebounded the next day to down Turlock Christian, 53-41. This time, Riverbank won the first three quarters, storming to a 29-16 lead at halftime, and not looking back. Cooper Vegas was high scorer with 18 points. Luca added 13.

"It was a much better defensive effort," Burnett said. "We were happy to allow 41 points; our goal is to allow 40 or less in each game."

In the finale, Riverbank easily outscored Tioga, 51-20. Vegas scored 14 points and Luca, 10, as Riverbank jumped out early, taking a 20-4 lead after the first quarter.

"We got out to a fast start," Burnett said. "Defensively we were high-intensity. We got a few steals that led to easy buckets, and we cruised from there."

Riverbank traveled to Sierra on Dec. 7 and hosts Delhi on Thursday.
