When you are a mainstay amongst the top of the Trans-Valley League standings year in and year out, every team in the league comes out geared up for their shot at you. Riverbank's varsity soccer Bruins were not caught off guard, winning their first TVL contests with relative ease.

Riverbank rolled past an up-and-coming Modesto Christian program 6-1 and remained hot by keeping the Ripon Christian Knights off of the scoreboard in a convincing 4-0 win to start off league play on fire.

Junior playmaker Ricardo Vigil dished out two assists and added a goal of his own during the Bruins second league victory over the Knights. Yogo Yepez, Nasir Alsamri and Ivan Zamudio all netted shots for Riverbank in the win.

The Bruins opened the 2008 TVL campaign with realistic aspirations of finishing the league schedule as the top team and making a lengthy run in this season's playoff tournament. Riverbank will obviously have to contend with Escalon High for any perks that come along with being one of the top two squads in the TVL and the results from the two squad's Sept. 22 showdown (at Escalon, played after press time for The News) will reveal a great deal as to who is the TVL's top seed. The Cougars took care of business against Hughson and Ripon Christian to open their season and will definitely want to make a strong statement in the league standings.

The Bruins will continue down the TVL road with a home match against the Ripon Indians this week followed by a trip to Hughson to take on the Huskies.
