Spring sports at Riverbank High are coming to a close soon, with season ending games hosted for some this past week and league tournaments ahead for others.

Bruin Co-Ed Tennis

The Riverbank High Co-Ed Tennis Team closed out its regular season on the home courts, on both Tuesday and Thursday last week. And they posted solid wins against substantial Trans-Valley League opponents, according to coach Bruce Edwards.

Thursday’s matches, against a strong Ripon High team, found the Bruins on top with a 7-2 final score.

Earlier, on Tuesday, the Cougars of Escalon came to town. They left with a 6-3 loss to the home team host Bruins.

“We had six three setters,” coach Edwards said of the battle with Escalon.

Riverbank won five of them, which helped result in the victory.

“A lot of close matches,” he reported. “Previously, they beat us 5-4, and won the only three setter in a tie breaker. We are in a tie with them for fewest losses, but we are guaranteed at least a co-championship”

Riverbank, the coach added, will head to the TVL Tournament as the number one seed, by virtue of beating Escalon by a higher score, 6-3 as opposed to the 5-4 win that Escalon crafted previously.

He said the final outcome in the standings wouldn’t be official until after Tuesday, April 23 since Escalon had a match scheduled against Ripon High. Riverbank had beaten the Indians last Thursday.

As for the winning season, Edwards noted that his team is used to winning in league play.

“For several of our seniors, this is their fourth league title. Those players are Jackie Pantoja, Carla Ibarra and Daisy Ferriera. And for Zubaidullah Hamidi and Jasmine Rubio, this is their third year to win,” said Edwards.

Varsity Baseball

The Bruin team played a pair of games last week against the Indians of Ripon High School. On the ‘home and away’ schedule, they traveled on Tuesday, losing 12-4, then returning to face an 11-1 loss in six innings on the home diamond last Thursday.

They had tournament games scheduled this week, against Davis High in Modesto on Monday, April 22, then another Tuesday, against Johansen, in the Art McRae Tournament in Ceres. They’ll host Modesto Christian on Tuesday, April 30, at home and finish the home season on Tuesday, May 7, facing Hilmar, for Senior Night.

Lady Bruin Softball

The shorthanded girls softball team took a 13-5 loss at home against Hughson on April 15, then traveled to take a 13-3 defeat at Ripon’s Lady Indians. They don’t play again until Wednesday, May 1 in Hughson. Two home games remain after that.
