In Two Unexpected Outcomes

In what they expected to be their toughest track and field meet this season, Bruin athletes defeated Escalon in both the boys and girls divisions in Riverbank on Wednesday.

Riverbank won the boys meet by 79-54 and the girls meet by 86-54.

"The boys event at least I expected to be really close," said coach Monte Wood.

Among highlights of the boys division, Ralphie Stevens won both the long jump and triple jump.

"He usually wins the triple jump, but this time he also won the long jump by three quarters of an inch," said Wood.

Omar Fernandez, a freshman, led the two-mile event in 10:35, which is an exceptionally good time for a freshman.

David Harrison fell heavily, while leading the 300 meter hurdles event, but he bounced back up and recovered in time to take second place.

That small but very fast runner Brandon Parker scored two second places, in the 100 meters and in the 200 meters, both of them personal records.

Bruin boy winners included Harrison, with a time of 17.3 for the 110 high hurdles; Riverbank in 46.7 for the 4x100 meter relay race; Andy Sesma, in the shot put with a heave of 44-2; Stevens in the long jump with a distance of 19-6 and in the triple jump with 41-8; Mike DeYoung. in the 300 hurdles in 44.8.

Other winners were Daniel Searway in the 800 in 2:08; DeYoung, again in the pole vault with 13-6; Fernandez, in the 3200 in 10:37; and Riverbank, in the 1,600 meter relay in 4:45.

For the Bruin girls, Kasey Wool won four events.

"She wins four in every dual meet. She's very talented. She could win seven events if allowed to enter that many," said Wood.

Kelly Clancey, a freshman, scored personal bests in the pole vault and triple jump and is getting close to the school record in the triple jump.

"Our distance runners also did well. They are very good and we have a lot of them," Wood added.

Tiffany Lackey won two third places with gutsy performances, in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters.

Bruin winners for the girls were as follows:

100 meter high hurdles - Wool in 16.57; 4x100 meter relay - Riverbank in 55:7; 400 meters - Britanny Harrrison in 1:08; shot put - Lourdes Duarte with 31-11; triple jump - Clancey with 33-1; long jump - Wool with 14-6; 300 meter hurdles - Clancy in 53.59; pole vault - Wool with 9-6; and 4x100 relay - Riverbank in 4:39.

The next dual meet for Riverbank will be away, at Hilmar on April 21. The schedule also shows participation in the Woody Wilson Invitational on April 16.
