Angelo Novi Field on the campus of Riverbank High School was the site for yet another Sac-Joaquin Section Championship series this past week, with the Division IV and V trials and finals staged Wednesday and Friday, May 14 and 16. A group of local athletes placed well, while the tennis squad competed in their section tournament last week as well.

The Riverbank girls 4x100-meter squad of Olivia Bulygo, Aaliyah White, Johannah Rosillo and Valenzuela finished ninth, with a time of 52.72.

Riverbank’s 4x400-meter relay squad, of Bermudez, Alejandro Ochoa, Luke Castro and Garcia, finished the 4x400 relay with a personal record of 3:37.36, for sixth place. In the 4x800 relay, the Bruin squad of Bermudez, Gustavo Ortiz, Ochoa and Garcia placed second, at 8:24.75, for another personal record.

In the high jump, junior Luke Castro finished in ninth place, at 5-feet, 8-inches.

In the long jump, junior JuJu Law tied for seventh, at 20-feet even, and he finished 12th in the triple jump, at 38-feet, 3.5-inches.

TENNIS

In the CIF SJS Round Two Playoffs, Riverbank netters took Lindhurst, 7-2, on their courts on Tuesday, May 13.

In the semifinals last Thursday, the Bruins traveled to Sacramento to take on West Campus, but fell, 7-2, according to Coach Bruce Edwards. He said they had three third set matches, and lost all three.

“Players seemed a little flat,” he said. “Perhaps two long bus rides took their toll.”

West Campus then lost in the finals to Amador by a 5-4 decision on Saturday, so Riverbank finished third in the championship round, said Edwards.
