This week’s Senior Spotlight shines on Lady Bruin senior Paola Reyes, a three-sport athlete this year, although spring action was severely curtailed by COVID-19 closings. Nonetheless, Reyes made a big impact on her teams during her time at Riverbank High School.

Girls Volleyball

Though many eyes are on football or cross country races in the fall, Reyes concentrated on the Lady Bruin varsity volleyball season. Equally adept at back row action, handling serves and digs that came her way, she was also comfortable on the front line, both helping teammates with blocking as well as spiking for her own points in the game.

Lady Bruin Basketball

On the hardwood, Reyes was often called upon to bring the ball down the court, either shooting from near the three-point arc, sometimes passing inside to teammates or even driving on the rim herself. She brought a sense of calm to the floor and served as a quiet leader for her teammates, leading by example.

Track and Field

Despite being on the winning squad for the annual track and field kickoff Bruin Challenge, just before the season began, Reyes was among those slated for coverage later in the spring in what became a severely truncated season for the co-ed team. There was little time to get in any track and field meets, due to cancellation of school classes on campus and sports seasons going by the wayside in mid-March as a reaction to the COVID-19 situation.

Next week, it’s back to football, and more, with 2020 senior Nathan Alanis.
