Bruin girls posted their first soccer shutout with a 2-0 defeat of Livingston on Saturday.

The game was part of the two-day RHS Classic Tournament in which Riverbank placed ninth out of 12 teams. The team that the Bruins beat was the Livingston junior varsity.

Oakdale won the tournament. The Mustangs were trailed by Foothill, Franklin, Argonaut, Livingston varsity, Escalon, Ripon Christian, Waterford, Riverbank, Patterson, Denair, and Livingston junior varsity.

Bruin Sonia Silveira was named All Tournament.

"We won one game and lost two," said Riverbank coach Jim Anderson. But we were competitive, even against Oakdale."

Facing Oakdale on Friday, Riverbank finally lost, 8-0. But the first 20 minutes were scoreless until the Mustangs got ahead with three quick goals in a row.

Erika Fernandez, Anderson said, played an outstanding game for Riverbank, although she got "banged up" in the process.

That same day, the Bruins took on Argonaut, led 1-0 at halftime, but relaxed and lost the game at 2-1.

The Bruin scorer was Silveira with an assist from Luz DeLaTorre.

Going against Livingston on Saturday, Serena Palmer, assisted by DeLaTorre, and then Silveira on her own, scored for Riverbank.

Courtney Nelson, the Bruins only freshman, replaced the injured Fernandez in goal.

Defensive standouts were Rebecca Jimenez, Erica Galvan, Liz Lopez and Jackie Perez, said Anderson.

Playing a tough preseason schedule, the Bruins will compete in the Bret Harte Tournament during the weekend, and then face Bret Harte in Riverbank on Monday.
