Despite last week being Spring Break on the Riverbank High campus, some Bruin athletes were able to squeeze in a few make-up games and tournaments during the holiday.
Co-Ed Track, Field
Though they weren’t among those suiting up to compete last week, Riverbank tracksters did hold a meet the week before with Trans-Valley League rival Escalon.
Many of the boys events had so many entrants they had to be run in heats. Adrian Montoya placed first with a 49.7-second 300-meter hurdles, while Juan Salgado came in second, from a list of 19 entrants in the discus, with a throw of 103-feet, 1-inch. Rolando Bazan placed second in the high jump, at 5-feet, 4-inches.
RHS junior Bazan finished first in the triple jump, a personal record (PR) of 37-feet even. Montoya, also a junior, finished in second, at 33-feet, 9½-inches.
On the girls side, freshman Maya Guzman set a new PR at 13.1-seconds in the 100-meter dash. In the 400-meter event, three Lady Bruins finished in the top tier.
Freshman Giselle Fernandez came in first, at a PR of 1-minute, 4.1-seconds, with junior Miranda Calderon finishing at second place, at 1:08.1, also a PR, and Yadira Torrez, a 1:10.3, another PR.
In the 800-meters, Fernandez finished number one, at 2:44.2, while senior Dayanara Ruvalcaba came in second, at 2:45.5. Junior Gianna Cruz finished fifth at 3:07.6, and Raquel Jimenez ended up sixth, at 3:08.4, out of 11 competitors.
Fernandez and Ruvalcaba finished 1-2 in the 1600-meter race, at 6:06.8 and 6:06.9, respectively. Fernandez also finished first in the 3200-meter race, with a 12:53.0 finish.
In the 100-meter hurdles, senior Leticia Diaz finished second with a PR of 20.2-seconds. Junior Selene Navarro ended up in fifth place, at 22-seconds flat, also a PR. Diaz also finished second in the 300-meter hurdles, at a 57-second PR.
In the 4x400-meter relay, two Riverbank quartets finished on top. The hometown ‘A’ squad of Maya Guzman, Alex McIver, Miranda Calderon and Yadira Torres finished in first, at 4:37;2, while the ‘B’ team of Naomi Jimenez, Raquel Jimenez, Giselle Fernandez and Dayanara Ruvalcaba came in second, at 4:54.5.
Riverbank junior Chancis Gamez led the high jump at 4-feet, 4-inches, with the rest of the field being from Escalon. Juniors Selene Navarro and Kate Tigert topped the pole vault, at 7-feet even, and 6-feet-6, respectively.
Guzman finished on top in the long jump, at 16-feet, 1-½-inches, and all three Lady Bruin triple jumpers topped the list, with Sione Mol at first, with 29-feet, 2-inches, a PR, Yadira Torres second at 28-feet, 1-inch, and Leticia Diaz third, at 26-feet, 11-inches, also a PR.
This week, Riverbank hosts Hughson on Wednesday, April 19, then also feature a Distance Carnival on Friday evening, April 21.
Bruin Baseball
Over the holiday week, the baseball team played in the Windemuth Easter Tournament, hosted by Modesto High School. On Monday, April 10, Riverbank fell to Patterson, 11-1. On Tuesday, they fell to Ripon Christian, 20-9. On Wednesday, they beat Modesto Christian with an 11-1 final.
Returning to league play, they were scheduled host Modesto Christian on Tuesday, then host the Crusaders on Thursday. They’re set to play at home against Stone Ridge Christian on Saturday at 11 a.m.
Lady Bruin Softball
On Tuesday, April 11, the girls traveled to Central Valley High in Ceres, for a 15-4 loss, then they went to Manteca later in the week to beat Sierra High School, 11-1. Both were non-league games.
They were set to visit Livingston on April 19, as league action resumes, then go to Hilmar on Thursday, April 20.
Bruin Volleyball
The boys were to host Livingston on Tuesday, April 18, then hold Senior Night against Ripon High, with their last home match of the season set for Wednesday, April 19.
Co-Ed Tennis
Boys and girls tennis was also set to host Livingston on Tuesday, then host the Trans-Valley League Championship matches on Friday and Saturday, to end the regular season. Individual and doubles players can advance to sections based on their performances in the TVL meet.
Bruin Golf
The boys linksters are to compete against Livingston on Thursday, April 20.
