The Riverbank High School varsity volleyball team placed fourth out of 16 teams at the Carmichael Tournament.

In the same Saturday event, Monica Cardenas hit 19 aces and 19 kills. "She carried the team," said her coach Lisa Mila.

The Bruins lost the first match of the tournament. But they then defeated Lincoln, Mesa Verde and Rio Vista teams in a row before falling to Bear Valley in the semi finals.

The tournament was the high spot of a week, which began with losses to Calaveras on Tuesday and Bret Harte on Thursday.

Riverbank lost, 25-23, 25-22, 25-18 to Calaveras.

"It was a pretty close match. We hung in there. Our defense was good but our offense was still inconsistent," said Mila.

Kelly Clancey excelled at the net with "three huge blocks."

It was much the same story against Bret Harte on Thursday, when the Bruins again lost in three games, 25-17, 25-16, and 25-13.

"They were very good," Mila said of their opponents. "We were not communicating and we missed too many serves."

Clancey again came through with some superb blocking at the net.

This week, Riverbank is due to play Hilmar away on Tuesday and Ripon Christian at home on Thursday.
