Riverbank junior varsity girls split their basketball slate, defeating Ripon Christian by 39-31, thenlosing to Escalon, 37-33.

The Bruins won all but the third quarter against RC, leading 12-7 and 6-2 before losing the third quarter, 13-8, and winning the final quarter at 13-9.

Scoring leaders for Riverbank were Kelly, with 16 points; Vanessa Rodriguez, with 11 points; and Irene Castillo, with eight points.

"The girls played a good game. We shot the ball well and played steady defense all four quarters. RC made a run on us in the third, but we responded well and took control in the fourth. Kelly and Vanessa continue to give us most of our offensive production, but Irene has really raised her game recently," said their coach Robert Mayfield.

In the loss to Escalon, the Bruins dropped behind by 4-2 and 18-6 in the first half before rallying to take the third quarter, 12-6, and the last, 13-9.

" We got off to a terrible start offensively in the first half, and Escalon was way ahead in the second quarter," said Mayfield. "We were down by 22-8 at the half, but we changed a few things on offense and dominated from then on. Unfortunately, we made those changes too late and weren't able to come out on top.

Top scorers were Clancey, with 18 points; Rodriguez, with nine; and Heather Medrano, with six.

"I take partial blame for our first half struggles, but we were also missing a few key players due to missed practices and injuries." Mayfield added. "Kelly was amazing in the second half, and our team fought hard but came up a little short."
