Riverbank point guard Robert Cunha, 0, takes a jump shot at the key for two points in a varsity boys basketball game against the visiting Enochs Eagles of Modesto. The Bruins couldn’t seem to overcome the height advantage the visiting team posed, giving up the non-league pre-season game 58-49.

Closing out the final week of the semester, and the school year, Riverbank High sports teams were busy on the field and the court this past week. Following is a recap of the action.

Bruin Basketball

The boys varsity hosted Enochs of Modesto on Monday, Dec. 10, playing hard but unable to overcome a height advantage, seemingly at every position. They finished down, 58-49, despite good shooting from the floor. It was a makeup for the non-league game that was postponed earlier because of the smoke in the valley.

The next day, the team traveled to Bret Harte High School in Angels Camp, winning 58-52.

Tuesday, Dec. 18 they were scheduled to host Hilmar in the Trans-Valley League opener, with a Dec. 19 non-league game set against Waterford. The Bruins will travel to Escalon on Friday, Dec. 21 for a TVL contest.

Lady Bruin Basketball

The girls had a busy week, playing in the Livingston Tournament. They defeated Ceres, 46-39, on Thursday, Dec. 13, then took a 71-24 loss to Merced’s Lady Gauchos of El Capitan High School. They lost on Saturday, 37-29, to the Dos Palos Lady Mustangs. They were scheduled to travel to Hilmar on Tuesday, Dec. 18 to open the Trans-Valley League season, then host Escalon in a TVL contest on Thursday, Dec. 20.

RHS Soccer

Both boys and girls varsity soccer teams hosted Argonaut’s Mustang teams. Last Wednesday, Dec. 12, the Lady Bruins were victorious, handing the Jackson girls a 2-0 loss. Before that, on Monday last week, the Bruin boys handed out a 6-0 defeat to the visiting Mustang varsity team.

Boys Trans-Valley League play was set to begin Tuesday, Dec. 18 with Riverbank hosting Livingston. They’ll play at Hughson on Friday. League play begins even though Riverbank is on Christmas break. Other schools don’t get out until the end of this week.

The girls were scheduled to play at Livingston on Dec. 18 as well to open the league campaign.
