Spring sports underway with pre-season scrimmages

With a few breaks in the rainy weather, Riverbank’s spring sports athletes have been able to take to the playing fields.

Prior to the roll out for spring, the Bruin varsity soccer boys finished the winter season in the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs, but fell in the first round, losing via a penalty kick shootout.

Meanwhile, the Lady Bruins had a strong run in the basketball Section playoffs. In Division 4, Riverbank opened with a 77-39 win over Sutter on Feb. 13 and followed that up with a 63-36 quarterfinals win over Hughson on Feb. 15. But their run came to an end in the semifinals, as they faced off with Colfax, and lost to the top seed Falcons, 64-47, on Tuesday, Feb. 20. Colfax went on win the D4 Section Championship with a victory over Escalon at UC Davis on Friday, Feb. 23. The Lady Bruins, with two wins in the Section playoffs, qualified for NorCals and were scheduled to travel for an opening Division 4 game on Tuesday, Feb. 27.

The Bruin basketball boys got knocked out of the playoffs in the quarterfinals by Union Mine, but the championship was won by Venture Academy from Stockton.

 

Bruin Baseball

The baseball boys lost their first scrimmage, against Grace Davis High School from Modesto, 14-0. They were to host Waterford on Monday and Delhi on Tuesday, Feb. 27. Friday, March 1, they’re scheduled to play at Linden.

 

Lady Bruin Softball

Girls softball beat Enochs High, from Modesto, at home, 4-3, on Friday, Feb. 23. They were to host Sierra High from Manteca on Monday, Feb. 26 and are scheduled to play in the Bill Evans Memorial Tournament in Ceres this weekend.

 

Bruin Volleyball

The boys were scheduled to host Enochs on Tuesday, Feb. 27, then play at Venture Academy in Stockton on Feb. 29 and at Oakdale on Friday, March 1.

 

Co-ed Track, Field

Runners, throwers and jumpers are getting ready for competition in the Timberwolf Invitational at Sierra High on Saturday. Next Tuesday, March 5, they host Ripon for their first home meet.

 

Co-Ed Bruin Tennis

Riverbank is scheduled to host its Doubles Tournament on Friday and Saturday, March 1 and 2.

This group is a bit smaller than during football season, but this year, they included Lady Bruin games as well as the boys, something that didn’t happen much in the past.
