Tennis Team Knocks Out Gustine

Their scheduled tennis match against Escalon having been cancelled by Tuesday's rain, the Bruins took advantage of Thursday's sunshine to play Gustine in Riverbank and won, with a 5-2 score.

"We played for fun. We've lost to them before. They came to us. Three of the matches were very close. Our win was closer than the score indicates," said Bruin coach Bruce Edwards.

In singles, Riverbank's David Unruh lost, 1-6, 3-6. Antonio Vigil won, 6-2,7-5; Amber Nickles won, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (10-8); and Leslie Thissen lost, 3-6, 3-6.

"Amber's match was particularly close," said Edwards. "She got ahead, 5-0, in the tiebreaker. Then the other girl won five points in a row. They played again and Amber nailed her with hard serve."

Both the boys and girls doubles also went back and forth in very tight games.

"The score could have been 5-2 in favor of Gustine rather than us. One point often settled the match, "Edwards added.

The Bruins now have the impressive record of 10-2 overall and 2-1 in the Trans Valley League.

On returning to school next week, the Bruins are scheduled to play their away match against Livingston on Tuesday, then face Patterson at home on Friday. The match against Escalon has been rescheduled for Thursday, April 13, in Escalon.
