A 24-15 rally from Hilmar gave Riverbank High's varsity boys basketball team a scare, but the Bruins closed with a 17-14 fourth quarter advantage to push past the Yellowjackets in a 62-50 finale on Jan. 13.

"Our biggest issue is playing 32 consistent minutes," Riverbank coach Jeff Jennings said. "One of these days a team is going to make us pay for letting our foot off the gas."

The win and a 62-20 victory over Orestimba three days prior improved Riverbank's Trans-Valley League standing to 3-1, with a key contest with visiting Ripon (2-1) looming on Friday.

"Obviously I'm happy with the start but we have a ways to go," Jennings added. "I do believe that we are continuing to get better. These kids truly want to win and they work hard every single minute of every single day."

Anthony Navarette led Riverbank with 15 points against Hilmar. Rolaun Dunham converted 13 points while Kenny Veliz chipped in 12. Robert Martinez, Alex Reynaga and Markus Benson each scored six points while Logan Nabors added four.

On Jan. 10, the Bruins led Orestimba by just three points after a quarter, but erupted for a 41-13 rally across the next two periods of play.

Ten players scored against the Warriors, including Veliz, who managed a game high 13 points with three steals. Dunham (12), Martinez (10), Reynaga (seven), Navarette (five), Miguel Guzman (four), Armando Manriquez (four), Nabors (three), Oscar Nunez (two) and Luis Solario (two) also found the net.
