By the time 1600-meter relay runners capped the Trans-Valley League tri-meet between Orestimba, Modesto Christian and host Riverbank High on March 30, it was clear which team reigned supreme.

Riverbank boys beat Orestimba 79-56 and Modesto Christian 105-29, while the Lady Bruins ousted the pair 82-37 and 109-22 respectively.

"I felt that our athletes performed very well," Riverbank coach Monte Wood said. "On the boy's side, Orestimba had four very talented athletes, but our depth proved to be the difference.

"On the girl's side, we dominated both competitions."

Freshmen phenom Mikayla Florez showed she isn't only strong in long distance races by nabbing a 64.2 time to win the 400, she also took the 800 (2:32), and watched Mariella Vigil, Vanessa Vargas, Erica Orellana, and Lety Herrera speed to a winning 400-relay time. The same foursome nabbed a sharp 55.4-second time for an impressive personal best at the Falcon Invitational in Atwater on Saturday. Denise Zamora won the 3200 during the tri-meet, and saw Vargas take the triple jump.

Bruin boys found a tremendous leg of the 400 relay from Robert Martinez (winner of the triple jump and 200), and watched Kenny Veliz speed to a sharp winning time of 45.2-seconds. Alex Reynaga ended first in the 300 hurdles, while freshman Orlando Gutierrez won the 110 hurdles. His classmate, Fabian Arana, took the discus while Angel Duarte won the shot put. Joel Carillo and Luis Figueroa ran personal bests in the 800 and 1600 as well.

"Overall, I am seeing good progress especially with the sprint crew," Wood said. "We have tough challenges ahead of us over the next three weeks with Ripon, Escalon, Hughson, and the county meet coming up. We will see what we are made of over the next three weeks."

Jackie Herrera won the 3200 in Atwater and tied her personal best time of 12:41. Adriana Rosales was fifth in the 1600 and second in the 3200 while Gina Retana was fourth in the 3200.
