Turnovers Spoil Girls Junior Varsity Play

Too many turnovers did not help the Riverbank girls who lost by 40-31 to Hilmar, and 40-34 to Hughson junior varsity basketball.

The Bruins started the game, 13-6, against Hilmar on Tuesday and lost the second period also 9-7. The third quarter was an improvement with Riverbank leading, 11-8, but the Bruins slipped again, 10-7, in the final period.

"We got a slow start and were behind 22-13 by halftime," said coach Robert Mayfield. "Hilmar hit three 3-pointers in the first half and we were not scoring. We got three points up in the third quarter, but turned over the ball in the last quarter."

All told, however, it was not a bad performance against a 20-0 team, which blew the Bruins out of the water in their first meeting.

Britanny Harrison scored 10 points for Riverbank, followed by Courtney Brock with eight points, Nicole Fatone, with seven, Kelly Clancey, with four, and Maritza Garcia, with two.

Careless turnovers and some laziness in defense caused the Bruins to lose, 40-34, to Hughson in the second game of the week.

"We played in spurts and our rebounding was poor," said Mayfield.

The Bruins led the first quarter, 13-9, but lost the others by 11-6, 10-6, and 10-9.

Harrison led Riverbank on points with11, trailed by Brock, with 10, Clancey, with six, and Kayla Sedain, Chelsi Walls and Erica Galvan, each with two points.

Hughson is 8-3 in league and the Bruins lost to them the first time.

The junior Bruins were 6-6, in league as of Monday with two games left to play.
