Though school has been recessed for the summer, Riverbank High School hosted its annual Alumni Basketball Tournament over the past weekend.

Games were played on both Friday and Saturday, with the championship match beginning at 2:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon, June 28.

Boys varsity basketball coach Jason Herrera noted that there was a change in this year’s event.

“We renamed the tournament as the ‘Roger Mayfield RHS Alumni Tournament.’ Roger was an RHS alumni who, along with his father Mike, was a huge fan and supporter of our basketball program,” explained Herrera.

Players from many eras of RHS basketball made up the teams that competed, but Herrera noted that, although current varsity players could compete, because they’re not yet ‘alumni,’ they couldn’t win the tournament.

The winners of the tournament were members of the UpTop team.

They included Kelly Wheelock, Steve Milanes, Xavier Esquivel, Paul Jones, Ray Baca, Aaron Gentry, Angel Esquivel, Carlos Villapudua, and Frankie Pineda. Though coach Hererra was also a member of the UpTop crew, he was unable to participate in Saturday’s championship action, but he said his young son, Evan Herrera stood in for him in the trophy photo. This was the third title for the UpTop team in the alumni event in the last four years.
