Varsity Ballplayers Chalk Up Win

Plenty of hits and quite a few runs gave the Bruins an 8-1 win over Waterford in varsity baseball on Saturday.

As Riverbank batters came to the plate, Adan Mercado went 4-for-5 with three runs and three stolen bases, Jason Canada was 3-for-4 with two runs and two stolen bases, and Gabe Garcia went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Zac Swanson pitched the complete game and struck out seven batters in giving up four hits.

Riverbank scored two runs in the third inning, one in the fifth and a clutch of five in the sixth.

The Bruins did not perform so well against Calaveras on Wednesday, making seven errors and losing by 11-8.

"Calaveras was leading, 6-2, in the fifth. We tied it at 6-6, then in the sixth inning we made two errors and let them get three runs," said Bruin coach Mike Carrigg.

Kevin Cole pitched the first five innings for Riverbank.

"Not his best stuff, but it wasn't bad. It kept us in the game," said Carrigg. Cody Avey relieved him on the mound. Then came the errors which frequently sabotage the Bruin efforts.

At bat, Mercado went 2-for-4 with two triples, Avey also was 2-for-4 and Garcia went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.

Thursday's scheduled game against Summerville was called after four innings due to rain and will be replayed later in the season.

Due to return to TVL play and face Patterson and Ripon in home games this week, the Bruins now have a 4-4 season record.
