Bruin girls defeated Hughson, 58-42, at varsity basketball on Thursday, Feb. 10, to boost their chances of making the playoffs.

Riverbank coach Scott Erickson noted that 16 teams go to the playoffs. The Bruins are 6-6 in league and rated 13th with two games left to go this week.

"Our defense was really strong. We basically shut them down," he said of the Hughson game. We've been working to reach our potential in offense too and this was it."

"Every player piled in and everybody contributed," he added.

Riverbank opened by winning the first quarter, 8-7; took over, 18-7, in the second quarter; increased the lead with a 24-11 third quarter; and could afford to lose the last period, with a score of 17-8.

Courtney and Chelsi Walls led the shooting with 12 points each; Sonia Naranjo scored 11, and Monica Cardenas, 10. Katie Gettling chipped in with six points; Janet Moya, with three; and Karina Vizcaino and Nicole Fatone, with two each.

For a total of six successful outside shots, Walls hit four and Cardenas and Naranjo, the other two. The Bruins went ten times to the foul line for a total of 16 points.

In the previous game, on Feb. 7 against Hilmar, the Bruins lost a heartbreaker, with a 25-24 score.

"It was a very defensive game and we had the chance to win, but didn't execute," said Erickson, while noting it was encouraging to get that close to a very tough team. Hilmar holds the number three spot in the league standings.

In the low scoring game, Riverbank lost the first quarter, 6-2; won the second, 6-3; lost the third, 9-3; and won the fourth, 13-7.

Brock led the Bruins with seven points. Julissa Perez scored five points; Naranjo and Cardenas, four each; and Moya and Gettling, two each.

Riverbank sank four out of its 11 attempts at the free throw line.
