Varsity Girls Pull Out Double Overtime Win

It took two overtimes before an excited home crowd for the Riverbank girls to pull out a 56-51 win over Amador at varsity basketball on Thursday.

In a very tight game, the Bruins led by 16-15 at halftime, demolished Amador at 14-4 in the third period, but then caved, 13-24, to tie the game at 43-43 at the end of regular time.

"It was a great game," said Bruin coach Scott Erickson. "We fell apart in the fourth quarter. But in overtime we got a couple of steals and held on for the win."

Going into extra time, both teams could manage to score only two points each. Riverbank finally put the game away, 9-4, in a second period of overtime.

Monica Cardenas was the high scorer for Riverbank, with 17 points. Courtney Brock racked up 13 points and Sonia Naranjo, 11. Julissa Perez scored seven points, Chelsi Walls, six, and Katie Gettling, two.

On the boards, Brock was credited with 13 rebounds. Cardenas had seven assists and she and Brock posted four steals each.

Amador totalled 32 fouls and Riverbank, 19. Riverbank sank 18 out of 41 baskets in visits to the free throw line.

The Bruins also won an away league opener, 43-28, against Ripon Christian on Saturday.

Cardenas hit 12 points, Brock had 11. and Naranjo. nine.

"We were ahead, 15-14, at halftime and got stronger in the third and fourth quarter," said Erickson.

"Any time you beat RC it's good, especially in league play. Although they are not so tough this year as usual."

The Bruins were 5-7 for the season following the game against Ripon Christian.
