To Lincoln Is Heartbreaker
Talk about a close encounter.
Riverbank girls lost their basketball playoff game against Lincoln by a heartbreaking 52-51 points.
"It was a great game. It went back and forth. There were too many turnovers, and we just couldn't put them away," said Bruin coach Scott Erickson.
"We were ahead with 17 seconds left. Lincoln got an interception and scored. We came back with seven seconds left and our shot rolled off the rim," he added.
Bruin cagers placed high enough to be playing their first round of the playoffs at home before a boisterous crowd. It was the first time in many years Riverbank had won a playoff home game, although they reached the CIF Sac-Joaquin Sections two years ago.
Riverbank went into the game with a 16-11 Trans Valley League record, compared with Lincoln's 15-13.
The Bruin girls went ahead, 16-12, in the first quarter; lost the second, 16-10; and won the third, 13-7, to boast a 39-35 lead going into the final quarter.
Among four seniors playing their last high school game, Megan Medrano scored 20 points and Angela Lopez 12. Sonia Naranjo posted nine points, Monica Cardenas and Liza Mila chipped in with four each, and Janet Moya scored two points.
Naranjo and Lopez each hit a 3-pointer. Riverbank sank five out of 13 attempts at the free throw line, and had 12 fouls.
