David Gomez, at 112 pounds, and Ralphie Stevens, at 145 pounds, were the standouts among Riverbank wrestlers contending at the Riddle Tournament in Oakdale on Saturday.

Gomez lost his first match but won his next two to score a seventh place, said his coach, Jerry Pief.

Gomez lost to Jake Wight of Linden by a fall, then defeated Gabe Prieto of Sonora and Terry Saruwatari of Lincoln, also by falls.

Stevens was victorious in one bout and lost two, but he looked pretty good in all of them, Pief added.

Martin Moreno, at 119 pounds, defeated Louis Bracamonte of Ceres by a fall, then lost to Meng Thao of Golden Valley and Keven Gerow of Galena, both by falls.

Tim McDonald, at 125 pounds, lost both his bouts, to Daniel Osmer of Buhach and Steven Vasquez of Central, also by falls.

Riverbank took 13 boys to the tournament but one of them failed to make his weight of 171 pounds and could not wrestle.

While Riverbank was too late in gathering enough boys to put together a team for this season, the Bruins will be able to contend as individuals in tournaments.

Their next outings will be this Friday to the Western Invitational at Modesto Junior College, and next Tuesday to the Galt Tourney.
