Five wrestlers from Riverbank took on the Mel Focha JV Tournament in Escalon, with four out of the five getting at least one mat win in the Saturday, Jan. 5 tourney.

At 126 pounds, Nathan Gutierrez took fourth place with a record of one win, two losses. Adrian Salaazar went 2-1 at 145 pounds and earned second place honors.

"Ryan Stiner went 1-1 and then hurt his ribs, he was having a good day but he had to take an injury default," said assistant coach Gilbert Bargas Jr. "He was wrestling at 160 pounds."

Stiner did not place, as he was unable to continue after his first two matches.

Alejandro Ortiz wrestled at 145 pounds and had a couple of tough matches, going 0-for-2 on the day.

Representing Riverbank on the girls side of the bracket was Melissa Garcia, who won the only match she wrestled in the competition.

"They had a few girls there," Bargas said of the tournament, noting that Garcia got first place honors for her win.

The Bruins will host Orestimba in a Trans-Valley League match tonight, Wednesday, Jan. 9 and then the varsity will head to Escalon for the two-day Lloyd C. Engel Tournament on Friday and Saturday, Jan, 11 and 12.
